We made it—tonight is our final night of reading! What an amazing journey this book has been, and we’re so proud of all the time and effort you’ve put in. There won’t be a drawing tonight, so focus on enjoying the last chapters and finishing strong. Be sure to complete your booklet and turn it in to your teacher to earn points toward even more exciting prizes. Way to go, readers—what an accomplishment! 📚✨

A young boy sits in a cozy armchair reading a book with the words “The End” on the pages. A small baby skunk rests comfortably in a soft sling across his chest, looking at the book. A warm lamp glows beside them, creating a calm, cozy reading atmosphere
Thank you so much for your generous donations! The animal shelter will be so excited to receive all of these helpful items. Your kindness is making a real difference for animals in our community. If you would still like to contribute, we will happily continue accepting donations through next Thursday.

Congratulations to the Smith family, who won today’s drawing! We were so excited to watch our camera-shy student picking out all of the painting kits for his family to enjoy together—way to go!

🐾 Tonight’s post: Let’s talk about the animals around us! Share a picture of an animal you see in nature, your own pet, or leave a comment about an animal you would like to learn more about.

Student in a classroom holding a small canvas painting kit in front of their face while standing behind a table with several painting kits spread out, choosing a prize for their family reading activity.
📚 We just finished Chapters 17–18 of A Boy Called Bat, and it really got us thinking about how much Bat cares about the baby skunk and how hard he tries to do the right thing. Sometimes caring about something means being patient, listening to others, and learning along the way.
Your posts with the slings were darling. The prize for the daily drawing is a gift card to swig. Winners are: The Dunford and Fawcett families.

As a family, we invite you to look around your home for items that could help animals in our community as part of our Animal Shelter Drive. The items we are collecting are listed in the flyer.

📸 For today’s post, families can share a picture of the items you found to donate, or a picture of your student’s drawing from their booklet.

The flyer lists needed items including towels and blankets, dog and cat food, soft training treats, and new pet toys, with donations dropped off at the school office.

We are so thankful for the continued posts from our wonderful staff and families! Seeing the adventures you are sharing—both big and small—has been so much fun. From cozy reading moments to exciting outings, each post shows the special ways families spend time together.
The winners of todays drawing are: the Butler, Oyler-O'Brien, Stacey Smith, Flores, Walker, and Russell families. The students were given a blanket donated to us through the Davis School District Foundation.

As we continue reading A Boy Called Bat, we’re excited to meet a new character, Laurence! We love seeing how kind and patient he is with Bat and how he helps take care of the animals. Characters like Laurence remind us how important kindness and understanding can be.

Our social media post today is all about creativity! Bat designs a special sling to carry the baby skunk, and we’d love to see your ideas. Show us your animal sling creation by posting either:
A picture of your sling made in real life, or a drawing of the sling you designed.

We can’t wait to see all the creative ideas our amazing families come up with! Thank you for being part of this journey with us. Your participation makes our reading adventure even more special. If you haven't started reading you can catch up on it this weekend.

Sunset Elementary school counselor Allison Barben has become an integral part of our Sunset Elementary community. Her journey to becoming a staff member at Sunset Elementary was inspired by the supportive and family-like atmosphere she experienced while subbing at the school. "When I became a school counselor, it felt less intimidating to me to come here because I knew I would have a lot of support from admin and staff," Barben shared. She proudly describes the school as "small but mighty," highlighting the excellent teachers, dedicated staff and hardworking students. One of Barben’s most memorable moments at Sunset Elementary is witnessing the students develop empathy, compassion and effective communication skills. "It's always rewarding for me to see our students treat themselves and others with kindness and learn how to effectively communicate," she said. Barben believes that these skills are as integral to their education as the academic lessons they receive daily. As a mother of three, Barben’s passion for helping children learn and grow is deeply personal. She stays motivated by remembering the uniqueness of each child and the importance of meeting them where they are. "I try to remember that each child is unique and it's important to 'meet them where they are at' rather than wish they were different," she explained. Barben finds immense joy in working with her students, cherishing the smiles, hugs and high fives she receives daily. "There is a lot of JOY in elementary school, and our students are excited to be here, have a smile on their face and are as happy to see me as I am to see them!" she exclaimed. Her advice to those considering a career in education is both encouraging and realistic. Reflecting on her own experience of returning to school at age 40 to earn her Master's degree, Barben said, "I wanted to make a difference, and I wanted to help kids. I would encourage people to have a career in education for those same reasons. It can be challenging work, but also hugely rewarding!"
